Introducing your family to Southern Cross Early Childhood School
Starting a new school is an exciting time for your child and your whole family. Below is some information to help you have a smooth transition into Southern Cross Early Childhood.
Transition into preschool
Preschool families who have accepted enrolment for preschool will be invited to a 60-minute orientation session with their child in term 4 of the year prior to their child starting preschool. These orientation sessions are an important opportunity for families to share the excitement of starting preschool and to experience the environment with their child. Children and families will meet key staff members and are provided with a Show Bag with information and resources to support a smooth transition to preschool the following year.
We encourage families to talk with staff during these sessions to let us know of any special considerations their child/family may need to ensure a successful transition to preschool.
From Preschool to Kindergarten
By enrolling your child at Southern Cross Early Childhood School, your child will automatically move on to kindergarten in our school. As with all transitions the staff will ensure that the move from preschool to kindergarten is successful. To do this we have implemented a transition program for our preschool children. This involves the children spending a number of sessions exploring in the Kindergarten room, familiarising themselves with the physical environment and routines. These occur during normal school hours.
From Year 2 to Other Schools
The transition to Year 3 from an Early Childhood school is an exciting milestone for all our children. This information is provided to ensure that that all families have the required information as they work through the transition and orientation process for the following year.
Southern Cross Early Childhood School and the other public schools in our area are part of the ACT Government school system and the Belconnen Schools Network. The Schools work closely together, with the support of the School Network Leader to ensure that there is consistent and comprehensive information for families on many issues including curriculum delivery, education pathways and transitions.
In addition to the work undertaken across the Network, the School works very closely with the Principals of Florey Primary School, Hawker Primary School and Weetangera Primary School to ensure that they have a general knowledge of possible enrolments for the following year.
The Education Directorate has comprehensive information about enrolling in an ACT public school at Enrolling/Transferring - ACT Public Schools. You can find information about the Education Participation (Enrolment and Attendance) Policy, priority enrolment areas, and the process for the coming year. You can also access website links for each school at Directory of Schools.
The following points summarise this information for the children at Southern Cross Early Childhood School.
- Children who live in Page and Scullin have priority access into one of the following schools depending on current school vacancies - Florey Primary School, Hawker Primary School and Weetangera Primary School or families can apply to any school and acceptance is dependent on spaces available.
- Children who live in another suburb have priority access into their local school or families can apply to any school and acceptance is dependent on spaces available.
