Thinking of enrolling your child in 2025?
If your child turns four before 30 April 2025, they are eligible for enrolment in Preschool for the 2025 school year.
Southern Cross Early Childhood School is holding information tours for new families to enable you to see our lovely learning environment and to give you a chance to ask any questions you may have about enrolling at Southern Cross Early Childhood School.
- Thursday 4 April, 9.15-10.00am
- Monday 8 April, 4.00-4.45pm
- Thursday 2 May, 10.00-10.45am
- Monday 6 May, 3.30-4.15pm
- Wednesday 8 May, 4.30-5.15pm
Enrolment for the 2025 school year will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2024 and can be found here: https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/enrolling-in-a-public-school

Coming soon: Parent Portal

During term 1 we are rolling out a new Parent Portal, a secure online platform used to share student information between you and your child’s teachers.
Using the Parent Portal on your mobile phone, tablet or computer, you will be able to:
- notify us if your child is sick or explain an absence
- book parent-teacher interviews
- receive academic reports
- receive our school newsletter
- receive messages from your child’s teachers
- make payments
- access the school calendar and your child’s student timetable.
One of the many benefits of the Parent Portal is that it will be used by all ACT public schools from preschool through to year 12, so there will be no need to use a different system as children change schools during their public-school journey. If you have children at nearby schools you will not need to sign up to the system twice. You will be able to easily add a student to your account once their school has access to the Parent Portal.

To access the portal, you will need to create or have access to an ACT Government Digital Account. You can sign up now and complete the level 2 identity verification process to get ready for our launch this term.
To complete the identity verification process you will need one of the following:
- Driver's licence
- Australian Passport
- Birth certificate
- Australian citizenship certificate
- Change of name certificate
- Marriage certificate
- ImmiCard
- Australian visa
- Medicare
- Centrelink Concession Card
Visit the ACT Digital Account website to create your account: https://www.myaccount.act.gov.au/
If you have any issues with creating your account and completing your level 2 identity verification you can get in contact with ACT Digital Account to resolve by calling 13 22 81.
You will receive an email in term 1 with an access code to link your existing account to your child’s records. If you have any questions, please contact the school on nicole.emerton@ed.act.edu.au or call 61420020

Southern Cross Athletics Carnival

Our first whole school athletics carnival since 2019 was a huge success!
The scene was set, picnic rugs were out, children were ready and drink bottles were full. Mother Nature put on a wonderful show for the day and the children were off, running, throwing, jumping and pulling their way to athletics glory.
The tug-o-war, 70 metre race and tree relay were unanimously voted favourite events for the day. It was also agreed that the adult tug-o-war should become an annual event. I believe the staff are already training for the rematch.
It was wonderful to see such a high level of engagement from children, staff and parents and equally wonderful to have so many families watching and cheering.
Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers! These events cannot happen without you and it made the day even more special for our children.
Harmony Week Community Gathering - Tuesday 21 March

Bike and Kite Day 2022!

Yesterday’s bright and sunny weather was perfect for our annual Bike and Kite Community Gathering.
Kites were high and Dennis our Kite expert was on hand for repairs. Cherie kept us moving and grooving with drummers’ circles, singing and dancing. The Gecko Gang added some colour and glitter and our bikes and scooters were in motion.
Together we played, zoomed, munched, connected and relaxed – we even had time for a nap.
This event was made more special by the support of ACT Children’s Week, our amazing P&C and all the helping hands.
Thank you to our families and the wider community who came to share their Sunday with us.

These sessions will be held mainly outside to ensure we are following current ACT Health guidelines. We will also keep the groups to a minimum where possible.

Harmony Week Community Gathering

Our Community Gathering was a big success. Seeing everyone make connections, sharing craft and warming up with coffee was a fantastic way to re-engage. The Smoking Ceremony led by Wiradjuri Echoes was a powerful way to cleanse and start anew. Our Year 2 leaders worked alongside Elder Duncan Smith OAM and his daughter Jakida in our Reconciliation Courtyard – they handed over custodianship of this significant place and championed us to get smarter about traditional ways of knowing and being. We are hopeful that this learning over time will create ceremony, interconnectedness and deep understanding across our community.
Thanks to all of the families and educators that made the extra efforts come along to play – we are grateful for the time shared together.

We have had such a lovely week. It has been wonderful to see all of the children's smiling faces and to watch them reconnect with their peers after such a long time at home.
Family Board Games Night – Wednesday 12 May 2021

How wonderful it was to see so many families attend our Family Board Games Night. The hall was buzzing with excitement as families played familiar games and discovered new ones. The school has a large number of board games in the library for borrowing. Please see Nicole at the front desk if you would like to take a game home to play with your family.

Outdoor Learning Day and NAIDOC Week

What a fabulous day we had last Wednesday celebrating both Outdoor Learning Day and NAIDOC Week. As children, teachers and educators were learning on Country, I felt such a strong connection to the land and had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude throughout the whole day. A big thank you to Lyndall who came to visit us and officially opened Slide Mountain. This was a popular play area for much of the day.
Book Week 2020

Our Book Week celebrations may have looked a little different this year, but we still had fun! Anglicare and P-2 children joined together for a Book Week parade on Thursday 22 October. We enjoyed seeing everyone’s costumes, along with their chosen book. Many thanks to our families who supported the children in their quest to dress up.
Other activities during the week included a Green Sheep hunt, using clues which had been carefully crafted by Karen, Hayley and Nicole. Our Reading in the Wild competition, $20 Scholastic Book Club lucky draw prize went to Ella in Kindergarten. Thank you to all the entrants, we loved seeing your pictures.

I am delighted to be appointed as Principal of Southern Cross Early Childhood School from the start of term 4. I feel honoured and fortunate to be leading such a wonderful and involved community. I know the school well and believe that Southern Cross Early Childhood School is a very special place that provides endless learning opportunities for children to show how capable and creative each child is in our supportive environment. I look forward to spending time with the children and staff and to become involved in learning.
As I settle in over the first few weeks, I look forward to getting to know your children and our expert teaching team. I also look forward to meeting all the wonderful families in our community. I welcome informal chats, so please come and say hello. I am also happy to make a mutually convenient time for us to meet.
I look forward to getting to know you and your child and being a part of the learning that ensures that from little things, big things grow.

Slide Mountain UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Construction of this playground installation is well and truly underway with progress every day. The preschool children have enjoyed the construction activity and marvel at the ‘lovely dirt pile’ that the digger has created.
Construction and landscape plans of Slide Mountain have been positioned by Nicole at the school’s front entrance and at the school’s back gate, for viewing by families and the children.
With Children’s Week approaching in October, we are working towards having an ‘official opening’ of Slide Mountain in partnership with Anglicare. Southern Cross children will participate in an outdoor learning day to acknowledge Children’s Week 2020.
